Albania’s shrinking population threatens pension scheme and labor market
On January 1, 2018, Albania numbered 2,870,324 inhabitants, which means a decrease of 0.2% compared to the previous year.
The statistics issued by the Institute of Statistics show that the population returned to the downturn trend after a slight increase on January 1, 2017.
Although the number of births is still greater than the number of deaths, bringing a natural addition of 8,637 people, it is the emigration phenomenon that is shrinking the population of the country.
During 2017 with emigration outflows, there was a negative balance of 14,902 inhabitants.
Such outflows and low birth rates have begun to turn into a threat to the country, which increasingly has less young people and more elderly.
If a year ago, people aged 0-14 years old accounted for 26.7% of the population, today they account for only 26%.
Even the ratio of persons over 65 years of age has risen from 18.9% to 19.4%.
This development implies that in the future the pension scheme will become an even greater burden, as there will be fewer working people to face a larger number of retirees.
