Albania falls in economic freedom / Heritage report for 2020, loses 5 positions but increases its score
Albania has lost 5 positions in the 2020 Index of Economic Freedom, just published by the Heritage Foundation. This foundation has been publishing the world’s most prestigious index of economic freedom since 1995.
Thus, this year, our country ranks 57th globally, among 180 countries, from the 52nd place a year ago. Despite losing 5 positions, our country has improved in economic freedom, as the overall score has increased. According to the report, this is due to improved fiscal health and that the decline in rankings is due to the stronger improvement of others.
Despite the downturn, overall rankings remain relatively favorable, as countries such as France, Italy, Greece, Spain or Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia or Hungary are weaker than us. As for the sub-indicators, those referring to business, labor or monetary freedom, as well as the tax burden, have deteriorated.
In the profile of Albania, it is argued that, in order to increase the likelihood of EU membership, it must register a significant increase in the indicators of property rights, the effectiveness of the judiciary and the integrity of the government.
Globally, Singapore comes first, followed by Hong Kong and New Zealand.
