Albania fertile ground for fake-news due to lack of regulations: Media Literacy Index 2018
Albania is one of the most underprepared countries in Europe to deal with the phenomenon of fake news but also with true news, states Media Literacy Index 2018.
This index ranks Albania in the third last place in Europe, with only 22 points.
Worse than the country in Europe are only Turkey and Macedonia.
All other countries in the region and Europe, meanwhile, record a convincingly better performance.
Albania’s ranking among the lowest ranking countries in this regard is also closely related to the lack of a law and regulators in terms of portals and websites that operate in almost total anarchy.
The lack of any oversight on these websites often causes the truth to fail and fake news spread quickly.
Not accidentally, Albania is one of the countries most involved in the last US presidential election.
Albania was the site of a number of pages that generated fake-news, which were regarded by some circles in Washington as crucial in the determination of the final result.
Another recent study covering the European continent, meanwhile, showed that Albanians are the most trusting people in the media.
The media literacy index takes into account a number of factors, including the level of education of a society, to determine whether a given country is able to protect itself from fake-news.
