Albania ranks 65th in the world, among 180 economies, in the Economic Freedom Index 2018, published annually by the Heritage Foundation.
In the region, Albania is better positioned than Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, while Kosovo and Macedonia perform better.
Compared to the previous year, the ranking is the same, while the score reports a minimal improvement of 0.1 points.
The overall index is calculated on the basis of 12 other subindicators.
Our country performs worse in that of freedom of work, the efficiency of the judiciary and property rights.
Albania has made dramatic progress in terms of fiscal health, states the report in the section dedicated to the country.
This has somewhat softened the poor performance of the judiciary and that of the tax burden but also the significant decline in business freedom.
Albania is 32nd in Europe, among 44 states, and below the continent’s average, states the report further on.
There has been considerable progress in Albania over the years, but more reforms are needed, especially in terms of the rule of law, to promote economic freedom, thus ensuring economic development, claims the report.
