ALSE expected to attract American investors despite lack of fiscal relief: AmCham’s Crawford
Albania does not offer proper conditions for attracting US investors.
New American businesses for 2017 are modest both in number and investment value.
But a positive impact on this situation with deteriorating indicators on the climate of doing business is expected to be produced by the first newly-opened private securities Exchange.
This is the comment that Mark Crawford, the head of AmCham in Tirana, made in an interview with Pertefol on TV Scan.
“We did not have any well-known company that we can mention coming from America, and I hope that with the opening of the securities exchange we will have some investors that will come through it, which is very positive, something that was lacking in the market so far. Albania has been a kind of “boxing” with only one fist, so only with banks. But we need other means as well, and the securities exchange is one of these.”
Referring to the concerns of members of the American Chamber of Commerce, Crawford urged the government to take measures, starting from fiscal relief.
An example that he cites is Macedonia.
“It works very well in Macedonia, they have a lot of problems, but attracting foreign investors has been very positive. Albania has not yet had a positive experience with this economic zone, according to the US experience.”
High taxes, government bureaucracy, monopolies, lack of qualification and the level of informal economy were listed as major concerns by members of the American Chamber of Commerce in the confidence index for 2017.
