September records positive figure for exports, but annual deficit still high
Albanian exports had a positive performance during September. According to the Institute of Statistics, exports in September increased by nearly 17% compared to the same month of 2016.
In nine months, Albanian exports reached ALL 201 billion, 13% more compared to the nine-month period of the previous year.
The rise in exports this year was driven by high growth in the group of construction materials and metals. Exports of this group increased by 40% over the same period of the previous year.
The main export column remains the textile and footwear group, accounting for nearly 44% of the total value.
Exports of this group increased for September as well, while for the whole nine-month period the growth was about 9%.
Meanwhile, the other important group for the export performance in recent years “Minerals, Fuels, and Energy” has not still achieved a viable recovery.
Exports of this group declined during September, while for the 9-month period they maintained a negligible increase over the previous year.
The growth in exports has somewhat curbed the country’s trade deficit. According to data from the Institute of Statistics, trade deficit fell by 6% over the same month last year.
For nine months, the deficit on the exchange of goods reached ALL 252 billion, up 2.1% compared with the same period of 2016.
Imports also increased for September by 10% on an annual basis. In nine months, Albania imported goods at ALL 453 billion, up 7% compared to the same period last year.
