State capture, corruption, crime and press freedom cited as main concerns along Albania’s EU path

The European Union has already opened its door to the Western Balkan countries, and it is up to them to meet the conditions to enable membership.
The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) has analyzed at a conference held in Tirana the factors that could hamper the EU membership of the region’s countries.
Valbona Zeneli, Director of the Program at the European Center for Security Studies, said that Albania as well as other countries in the region should address problems with state capture, corruption, organized crime and press freedom.
In February 2018, the EU has provided an updated and more robust strategy for the Western Balkans region.
The strategy is an invitation to countries to fulfill the conditions for membership.
